Polarized Sunglasses 101

HaberVision is one of the few manufacturers in the market that only offers sunglasses and ski goggles that are polarized. This is one of the many things, in my opinion, that makes Haber sunglasses superior. However, some people do not know exactly what polarized sunglasses do differently than regular, non-polarized, sunglasses. Here’s the scoop:

Polarized sunglasses were first introduced in the 1930’s, with pilots being among the first people to enjoy the benefits of this new technology and product. However, pilots quickly discovered that polarized sunglasses could be both a blessing and a curse. The glasses greatly improved the pilot’s vision by blocking the glare of the sun. Unfortunately, though, they also greatly hindered the pilot’s ability to read LCD displays. So as technology began to increase on board in private, commercial, and military aircraft, so too did the use of LCD screens in the cockpit. As this occurred, fewer and fewer pilots used polarized sunglasses in the friendly skies.

Before anyone could suffer the loss over the new paradox, polarized sunglasses were introduced to a different market. Fishermen, golfers, skiers, and many other outdoor enthusiasts and athletes began their embrace of the sunglasses. In the past, polarized sunglasses were used in situations where the user needed exact vision. This is still true today, but the more they gain popularity, the more they are being donned upon unlikely faces. Cataract patients, drivers, and even some walkers have found polarized sunglasses to be essential to their outdoor activities.

Polarized sunglasses have been used to aid fishermen for years, and not just for the reasons you may think. Of course, they allow anglers to look clearly into the water because the glare from the sun is blocked, but they also guard the eye from harmful ultra-violet rays that can cause damage to the retina.

How Polarized Sunglasses Work

The sun produces light that spreads in many different directions. The lens of polarized glasses have a film that reflects the light. So when looking at sun rays through a polarized lens, the glare that bounces off surfaces like snow, water, cars, or even glass become polarized. This means that the light will only travel in one direction, as opposed to spreading in different directions. This is one of the reasons it is better to use polarized sunglasses over regular sunglasses.

A normal lens will only dull the light, but it can still be very harmful. Users will still be forced to squint, which can sometimes cause migraines. Additionally, the users of normal lenses will still be vulnerable to damaging ultra-violet rays. Habervision Polarized Sunglasses Review

I received my Haber sunglasses two weeks ago and am truly impressed. I am native to Colorado and have spent the last 25 years living to ski and bike in the mountains near my home. Considering these hobbies and the 300 days of sunshine our state receives, I have become somewhat of a sunglasses freak over the years and have tried or owned some great and not so great pairs of glasses and goggles. When my brother-in-law, an avid outdoorsman and sunglasses fanatic in his own right, told me the story of how Bolle’s founder, Steve Haber, was producing killer polarized shades with quality to rival Oakley and Maui Jim, I decided to check out a pair to determine if it was a product I could endorse.

Since I’ve been eying some Maui Jim wireframes, I decided to purchase the Ibiza model with black titanium frames and pumice lenses. The Haber sunglasses arrived in a rugged yet attractive hard case. When purchasing sunglasses online, you’re not really sure exactly how you’re going to feel about the product but I was definitely stoked when I had the pair in my hand. Fortunately, these glasses fit perfectly and were so light I hardly feel them on my head or in my hand. It actually takes some getting use to these featherweights!

Two days later was my first real test and wore them driving to Berthoud Pass to do some backcountry skiing. It was a bright, beautiful bluebird day on the drive from Denver and my eyes were extremely happy and I seriously would forget I was wearing. The polarized optics effectively eliminated glare from the snow and did not distort any of the natural colors like some other polarized sunglasses I own. Since these weren’t purchased for skiing, I donned my Spy polarized shades that I love for climbing/skiing. After the ski and my ride home I was still wearing my spys. I swapped them for the new Habers and the optical difference was dramatic. I don’t want anything but the Haber Polarized sunglasses for driving.

As far as style is concerned, my wife is quoted with “those glasses are the bomb” – and I think I have plenty of cool shades. I think the Habers are sweet, too, but I’m definitely more interested in her opinion!

I don’t endorse many products but this is one I feel very confident about sharing with my friends and family as this is a superior product at a great price. At minimum, I’ll be buying the goggles for next winter.

I should note that if you don’t like the pair for any reason, Haber makes it really easy to exchange for another pair by including an exchange/return form. I think you’ll be pleased.
